I decided to watch another film on the indie channel. Dear David is a 2023 supernatural thriller, based on true story and actual events of Adam Ellis’ Twitter thread. Adam Ellis was a former writer at BuzzFeed, who described his experience with a ghost on Twitter. The story actually occurred in 2017, and his Twitter story went viral online, giving Adam over one million followers on Twitter. But in 2019 Adam Ellis left BuzzFeed to pursue independent ventures.

A 2023 movie, based on a true story

Directed by John McPhail, written by Mike Van Waes, and produced by Richard Alan Reid, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, Naysun Alae-Carew, and Charlotte Walsh, this story was based on “Dear David” by Adam Ellis. The movie stars Augustus Prew as Adam Ellis, Andrea Bang, Rene Escobar Jr as Adam’s boyfriend, Cameron Nicoll, and Justin Long.

The movie starts out with a ten-year-old boy named David trying to make friends on a social network, but some people are rude and trolling him. He is obsessed with the internet and his computer, refusing to get off the computer. Then, the story jumps to BuzzFeed company in NYC, 21 years later, where writer Adam Ellis is obsessed with his Twitter account, chatting with his followers. All of the sudden, the Dear David account gets his attention when Dear David tells Adam to ask him two questions but not three. Adam becomes deeply involved and obsessed with this Dear David that it affects his life, mentally, physically, and/or psychologically.

It appears that the people on Twitter don’t really take this Dear David seriously, often making fun of him and trolling him. When he tells them to ask him “two questions but not three,” they ask him three questions for entertainment purposes to see what will really happen, thinking that it is all a big joke. But that person who asked three questions ends up being tortured and/or dead. This profile page, Dear David, is suspicious because David appears to be a ghost, daring internet people to ask him three questions so that he can torture them and kill them through mind control by possessing their body. They don’t believe him, which leads to their sudden death. Adam ends up researching this Dear David to figure out who this person really is.

David ends up haunting him and making his life miserable. His two cats sense something creepy about this David energy inside the apartment. Adam and his coworker perform an exorcism in his apartment. Then, Adam calls a medium to come and see what she thinks. She feels negative energy at certain areas of the room, which is where David is usually at. This movie is a suspenseful horror film. Weird unexplainable things happen that drive Adam literally crazy that his boyfriend, coworker, and boss encourage him to see a psychiatrist. He considers it. But he goes to the hospital where this David and his parents were at to discover that they all have recently died. The ghost continues to terrorize him, trying to kill him, and he comes close to death. But he and his two cats are saved during the last minute by his friends.

After watching this movie, I became obsessed with this Dear David story on Twitter. I decided to look up videos about Adam Ellis and Dear David story on Youtube. This video is interesting because it goes through Adam Ellis’ tweets, explaining his experience with the Dear David account and the creepy David.

I decided to add another video of a girl reading Adam Ellis’s tweets about the Dear David ghost.
