The Orphanage: 2007 Spanish Movie, filled with suspense and sadness

I woke up in the morning and end up watching a 2007 Spanish movie, The Orphanage, produced by Guillermo del Toro and others. It was interesting and suspenseful film about a couple who decided to buy an old orphanage with their adopted son, Simon. The couple want to convert this orphanage into home of sick kids. Laura grew up in this orphanage, and she had happy memories there.

Her adopted son is one of the ill kids on medication. He fears death and often has nightmares. The orphanage appears to be haunted by other kids, such as Tomas. Simon can hear them and he likes playing with them until he suddenly disappears. While her husband Carlos leaves, Laura remains in the house with her husband’s Saint necklace. Carlos gives Laura his necklace, promising the Saint will help her find Simon.

Laura is skeptical, but she wears it anyway. She plays their game, hunting for clues. I actually noticed one of the clues which led to Tomas’ room, and Simon was wrapped up in a blanket. She soon realizes he isn’t alive, and she overdoses on pills because she wants to be with Simon. The end of the movie shows her husband at the cemetery leaving two red roses for his wife and adopted son.

Aurora, played by Geraldine Chaplin, appears eerie and mysterious, providing clues about Tomas and Simon. The movie is mostly suspenseful and sad.
